This wonderful Favino style guitar was handmade by Canadian luthier Michael Collins. A graduate of the Roberto Venn school of luthiery, Collins was one of the first luthiers in North America to construct accurate copies of Selmer guitars. Collins is equally famous as both an instructor and luthier. He is currently teaching Selmer luthiery techniques at the Roberto Venn school. Collins' research on the subject is contained in his book Building a Selmer-Maccaferri Guitar as well as in his instructional video.
This example of Michael's work is a unique Favino style model loaded with high end features. The wood choices include a spruce top, Brazilian rosewood back and sides, a koa headstock veneer, and a three piece Favino style maple neck. Additionally, the guitar is outfitted with premium Schaller Deluxe closed tuners and a DR tailpiece.
Michael did a very good job of capturing the traditional Favino tone. This instrument has the characteristically honky, nasal, upper mids and deep bass that Favino guitars are known for. The high end is very pleasant and rounded, making this a very listenable and forgiving guitar as anything you play sounds full and warm. Additionally, it is exceptionally easy to play as the action is set at a slinky 2.2mm. It nearly plays itself!
The condition of this guitar is very good. The top has some light scratches, pick wear, finish checking, and a small ding or two. The frets are lightly worn and still have plenty of life left in them. Some of the finish has worn off the back of the neck. The bridge is currently set quite low and has a few shims underneath the feet. There is some separation along the center seam between the bridge and the tailpiece. This was repaired with a cleat and is stable.
This very guitar was featured in both Michael Collins' book, Building a Selmer-Maccaferri Guitar as well as in his instructional video.
A French made guitar with these features would cost you at least $6K which makes this well preserved and gig ready instrument one of the best deals in the shop!
