With a career that career that spans nearly 40 years, Jim Triggs is
without a doubt one of the most experienced and talented American
luthiers. His many notable achievements include overseeing Gibson's
custom shop in 1980s, having his instruments displayed at the
Smithsonian Institute, and supplying instruments to long list of stars
including Pat Martino, Jimmy Buffet, Ranger Doug, Steve Miller, etc.
This
rare, short scale Gypsy model features solid maple back and sides, a
spruce top, and a mahogany neck. Hardware includes a Saga tailpiece,
Waverly three-on-a-plate tuners, and strap buttons which have been installed in
the heel and endpin. Unlike many Gypsy guitars, the truss rod is
accessed through the headstock rather than through the soundhole. The
bridge was built in the original Maccaferri style, with no feet so that
the entire bridge rests on the top. There is currently a small shim
under the bridge.
The condition is very good, with some mild fret
wear, significant pick wear on the top, and some small dings and
scratches. This guitar plays very easily and sounds clean with astonishingly
low 2.2mm action. This low action, along with the short scale, make
this instrument one of the easiest playing guitars in the shop.
This
guitar has a warm, rounded tone with soft, yet simple sounding highs
and a nice fullness in the lower midrange. It projects nicely but is not
overly aggressive or harsh, making it an excellent all around guitar for
lead, rhythm, or even unaccompanied solo playing.
It's rare we
have quality handmade Gypsy guitars of any kind in this price range, no
to mention ones built by luthiers with the experience and reputation of
Jim Triggs. Treat yourself to a prestigious guitar at a players price!
