2011 Culpepper
It's rare I have a handmade instrument under $3000, and even rarer to have one under $2000! This beautifully constructed Selmer copy was built by Andy Culpepper in Ithaca, NY. Andy is a very experienced maker of classical and flamenco guitars. Andy uses very few power tools, favoring to build his guitars primarily with hand tools which give him the most control over the sound and build quality of the instrument.
This instrument is a fairly straightforward Selmer copy with a few exceptions. As you'd expect, the top is spruce and the back and sides are Indian rosewood. The cedar neck, bone saddle, and untapered heel are interesting variations on the classic Selmer design.
This guitar speaks easily, with a bright, chimey high end and a clear, tight bass register. The mids are thick enough to add a little depth and complexity to single notes, but not overly muddy and diffuse. This instrument has very good projection making it a great lead guitar which should have no problems cutting through in even the most volume challenged situations. It has a fairly dry sound which only adds to the clarity and cutting power of the guitar.
All in all a very good handmade instrument at a price normally reserved for Asian imports.
