I’ve had a Saga DG-255 for many years. That was my reference point for what a Gypsy jazz guitar was. After much research, it became apparent that I might be missing something, not having a higher quality instrument. Man was that correct! The fit and finish on the Saga was great, and it was fine for getting into this music, but the difference in sound between it and this Dupont MD60 is night and day! With this guitar and a Wegen 3.5 pick, you play a note or chord, and it’s just “that” sound. Then...

2024 Dupont MD60

2024 Dupont MD60
Maurice Dupont has long been one of the most respected luthiers in France and one of the first contemporary makers to specialize in producing the Selmer Maccaferri guitar. Maurice first gained recognition as a builder of classical guitars and in 1989 was bestowed with the honor of "Best French Craftsman." Maurice was an apprentice of the legendary Gypsy guitar maker Jacques Favino, and in 1986 he began building his own Selmer style guitars which quickly became the most popular choice of professional Gypsy guitarists. Countless Gypsy stars including Raphael Fays, Biréli Lagrène, Tchavolo Schmitt, and Romane have played Dupont guitars which appear on hundreds of recordings.

Dupont's Gypsy models are built entirely in Cognac, France by master luthiers Patrick (who joined the Dupont team in 1994) and Mathias (since 2002) under the supervision of Maurice Dupont. The collective experience.of the Dupont team along with Maurice's stock of well aged, select tonewoods yields instruments of unsurpassed tone and playability.

The MD60 is a variation of the very popular MD50 model. It features a satin finish, gorgeous Santos rosewood back and sides, and a mahogany neck. Standard Selmer specs: 670mm neck, 15 3/4" body.

The tone on this particular example is exceptional! It posses unusually warm mids which yield rounded, full lead lines and big, robust chords.

2018 Dupont MD60

Pros: Expensive, but worth it!

Cons: Case a little too roomy

I’ve had a Saga DG-255 for many years. That was my reference point for what a Gypsy jazz guitar was. After much research, it became apparent that I might be missing something, not having a higher quality instrument. Man was that correct! The fit and finish on the Saga was great, and it was fine for getting into this music, but the difference in sound between it and this Dupont MD60 is night and day! With this guitar and a Wegen 3.5 pick, you play a note or chord, and it’s just “that” sound. Then you want to play for hours. The attention to detail in construction is amazing. I’m very picky, but can find nothing wrong with the fit and finish on this guitar. It arrived strung with 11’s and the action felt a little stiff at first. I switched these out for the 10’s with which I’m more familiar. Now it feels perfect. I did tweak the truss rod just a bit to remove some buzzing from the low E string at the lower frets. After this, no buzzing at all and the guitar feels and sounds amazing! The Dupont case it came with was a bit too roomy. It would protect the guitar just fine, but I don’t like to hear thumps from inside when I pick up a guitar case. So I shifted it to another Selmer fitted case that I had on hand. Now the fit is much more snug. If I ever decide to leave my Stimer pickup installed on the guitar, the Dupont case, with its extra room, will probably work great for that. Lastly, I can’t say enough good things about Michael! He was incredibly helpful and patient. We went through several steps to get me from the low-end Altamira I originally thought I wanted, up to the Dupont MD60 I have now. There was a miscommunication on the initial shipment, but Michael made everything right immediately. Some of the best customer service I’ve every experienced!
