2018 Dupont MD60
Pros: Expensive, but worth it!
Cons: Case a little too roomy
I’ve had a Saga DG-255 for many years. That was my reference point for what a Gypsy jazz guitar was. After much research, it became apparent that I might be missing something, not having a higher quality instrument. Man was that correct! The fit and finish on the Saga was great, and it was fine for getting into this music, but the difference in sound between it and this Dupont MD60 is night and day! With this guitar and a Wegen 3.5 pick, you play a note or chord, and it’s just “that” sound. Then you want to play for hours. The attention to detail in construction is amazing. I’m very picky, but can find nothing wrong with the fit and finish on this guitar. It arrived strung with 11’s and the action felt a little stiff at first. I switched these out for the 10’s with which I’m more familiar. Now it feels perfect. I did tweak the truss rod just a bit to remove some buzzing from the low E string at the lower frets. After this, no buzzing at all and the guitar feels and sounds amazing! The Dupont case it came with was a bit too roomy. It would protect the guitar just fine, but I don’t like to hear thumps from inside when I pick up a guitar case. So I shifted it to another Selmer fitted case that I had on hand. Now the fit is much more snug. If I ever decide to leave my Stimer pickup installed on the guitar, the Dupont case, with its extra room, will probably work great for that. Lastly, I can’t say enough good things about Michael! He was incredibly helpful and patient. We went through several steps to get me from the low-end Altamira I originally thought I wanted, up to the Dupont MD60 I have now. There was a miscommunication on the initial shipment, but Michael made everything right immediately. Some of the best customer service I’ve every experienced!
