2008 Hahl Super de Luxe Gitano

This 2008 Super de Luxe Gitano by Stefan Hahl represents the ultimate in contemporary Selmer guitar design. Most builders today obsessively try to replicate the design and building techniques of "golden era" guitars like the original Selmers, Busatos, and later Favinos. Hahl has dared to be different by using the Selmer design, which he has studied extensively, as a starting point for something new and unique. His guitars characteristically combine the complexity, warmth, and listenability of archtops and flatops with the punch and clarity of Selmers. The real genius of his work is that he has succeeded in making a contemporary, sophisticated sounding Gypsy guitar without loosing the essence of the Selmer sound. Others have tried to make such a guitar, but the end result is that warmth and complexity are traded for clarity and punch, which results in a very muted and dull sounding guitar. Not so with Hahl. His guitars produce notes with a rounded, satisfying tone but are still springy enough to shoot out of the instrument in volume challenged situations.

Hahl's work has been well received by the very finest Gypsy guitarists today. Most notably, by Bireli Lagrene who owns three Hahl guitars and has used them on most of his recent recordings. check out: Move, Just the Way You Are, To Bi or Not to Bi, and Live in Paris.

If you're looking to execute some of the nimble, high speed lines characteristic of Bireli Lagrene's virtuosic playing, then you'll be pleased to know that this guitar has action set at an astoundingly low 2.4mm! It plays more like an archtop than a Gypsy guitar, with the very low action and short scale length making even the most challenging passages possible.

Gypsy legends Dorado Schmitt and Hono Winterstein also play Hahl guitars.

Hahl  uses his finest woods for the Super de Luxe model. This guitar features 60 year old top and 60 year old Brazilian rosewood. Additionally, the wood used on this guitar is from the very same tree as Bireli Lagrene's personal guitar!! In fact, this guitar is exactky the same model the Bireli has been playing for the last several years.

  • Original Selmer Maccaferri shape with D-shaped soundhole
  • Master grade, hand selected 60-year workshop seasoned and aged Cedar top
  • 60-year workshop seasoned and aged Brazilian rosewood back and sides
  • Three-piece neck of exclusive figure flamed mahogany with figured German maple core
  • Hand selected master grade ebony fingerboard with elaborate abalone inlays
  • Mother-of-pearl and abalone soundhole ornamentation
  • Rosewood fingerboard and body bindings
  • Standard scale length: 650 mm
  • Rounded D-shaped neck
  • Ebony bridge with two compensating bone inlays
  • Bone nut
  • Schaller gold-plated tuners with ebony buttons
  • Gold-plated tailpiece embellished with ebony inlays
  • Thinly applied nitrocellulose lacquer finish
  • Thin coat of shellac applied to the inside of the guitar protects the wood from fluctuations in humidity for a consistent tonal character and steadfastly brilliant sound
  • Optional Class A French polish. Maximize the acoustic performance of your guitar with a hand-buffed top!

The superior woods on this guitar are not only gorgeous to look at, but also give the guitar a complex, refined tone that younger woods lack. The only other new Selmer type guitar that has such exquisite woods is the DupontVieille Reserve.

One of Hahl's innovations is the use of a bone saddle. He includes several saddles of different heights which allow you to easily change the action on your guitar. Ingenious!

This lightly used example is in mint condition. It has some very, very light scratches and scuff marks. Otherwise, it is indiscernible from a new instrument.
