2011 Peter Zwinakis Selmer
Peter Zwinakis is an up coming luthier from the Bay Area. His work shows a sincere dedication to the Franco/Italian tradition of Selmer Maccaferri guitars. This fine example is the equal of many of the best contemporary European guitars but at a player's price.
First off, the features of this guitar are normally only found on the infinitely more expensive flagship models of luthiers like Dupont, Barault, and Hahl. Materials and construction techniques are of the highest caliber:
-Heat bent pliage cedar top (the top was bent with a hot iron just like Selmer did it. Most Selmer copies today are forced top which generally doesn't have the projection and quickness of attack that the pliage tops have. Normally only found on flagship models like the Dupont VR)
-Ultra rare and beautiful curly walnut neck (it's bastogne walnut which is the rarest and most figured of all varieties)
-AAA premium Madagascar rosewood back and sides
-Lacquered interior (another flagship feature)
-The body is standard Selmer size (15 3/4")
-670mm scale
-Ebony fingerboard
-DR Tailpiece
-Schaller Classic Deluxe tuners
This instrument has a bold and mature tone, which is at least partially due to it's cedar top which is known for sounding like a fine aged instrument even when new. Lack of volume is certainly not a concern here as every molecule of this instrument shakes when you play it, producing torrents of rich, complex sound that fills the room. The high end is particularly focused, making this instrument especially adept at propelling single note lines above the din of over zealous accompanists. The chordal response is tight, with a very controlled bass which is ideal for those who like punchy rhythm sound.
Playability is excellent with 10 gauge Argentine strings and 2.8mm action.
Black Superior hardshell case included.
Although this instrument was built last year, it is brand new and in perfect condition. Peter moved recently and hadn't had time to finish this instrument and sell it till now.
This instrument is essentially a $9K guitar for less than half the price, as it has the things you pay big money for in a European instrument (fine woods, pliage top, fancy hardware, lacquered interior.) All this for much less, a fantastic bargain from a luthier who is quickly becoming one of the big names in North America.
