Stefan Hahl ’’Night Wind’’ 2008 Deluxe Gitano Oval Hole Guitar (60 yr Aged Spruce Top - 60 yr Aged B
This 2008 Deluxe Gitano by Stefan Hahl represents the ultimate in
contemporary Selmer guitar design. Most builders today obsessively try
to replicate the design and building techniques of "golden era" guitars
like the original Selmers, Busatos, and later Favinos. Hahl has dared
to be different by using the Selmer design, which he has studied
extensively, as a starting point for something new and unique. His
guitars characteristically combine the complexity, warmth, and
listenability of archtops and flatops with the punch and clarity of
Selmers. The real genius of his work is that he has succeeded in making
a contemporary, sophisticated sounding Gypsy guitar without loosing the
essence of the Selmer sound. Others have tried to make such a guitar,
but the end result is that warmth and complexity are traded for clarity
and punch, which results in a very muted and dull sounding guitar. Not
so with Hahl. His guitars produce notes with a rounded, satisfying tone
but are still springy enough to shoot out of the instrument in volume
challenged situations.
Hahl's work has been well received by the very finest Gypsy guitarists
today. Most notably, by Bireli Lagrene who owns three Hahl guitars and
has used them on most of his recent recordings. check out: Move,

Gypsy legends Dorado Schmitt and Hono Winterstein also play Hahl
guitars.
Hahl generally uses some of his finest woods for the Deluxe model. Most
commonly 40 year aged woods. But this unique Deluxe guitar was bestowed
with his very, very finest woods! The 60 year old spruce top and 60
year old Brazilian rosewood are normally reserved for his Super Deluxe
model (starts at ,0000). Additionally, the wood used on this guitar
is from the very same tree as Bireli Lagrene's personal guitar!! So
this guitar is a fantastic bargin...best woods for less...
3-part neck of 30-year carefully aged mahogany with 50-year aged
walnut core
First class ebony fingerboard with refined, round mother-of-pearl
fingerboard inlays
Black and white rosette and edge wood inlays
Solid rosewood fingerboard and body binding throughout
O-shaped sound hole: 670 mm
Rounded, D-shaped neck for excellent playability
Ebony bridge with two compensating bone inlays
Bone nut
Gold-plated tuning machines with ebony buttons
Brass tailpiece with ebony inlay
Finish: thinly applied nitrocellulose lacquer
The superior woods on this guitar are not only gorgeous to look at, but
also give the guitar a complex, refined tone that younger woods lack.
The only other new Selmer type guitar that has such exquisite woods is
the Dupont
Vieille Reserve.
This guitar, which was dubbed the "Night Wind", has a stereo Bigtone
pickup system. Hahl installed one of our DjangoBooks deluxe bigtones in
the bridge along with an additional piezo pickup under the top. The two
pickups are fed into a stereo end pin jack. I tested this system and it
works very well, with the two pickups balancing each other nicely for a
full, satisfying amplified sound.
One of Hahl's innovations is the use of a bone saddle. He includes
several saddles of different heights which allow you to easily change
the action on your guitar. Ingenious!
