8.85mm -
Just like the Insanity, the Colossal is 100% hand made by Vinni himself.
A lot of skill, love, and attitude go into making this piece of art.
Each one is different and unique. If one is made and just does not have
enough mojo to it, in the can it goes. When you hold a V-Pick Colossal
or Insanity, you are holding a one-of-a-kind! There are over 75 grinds
on this pick! It hits the grind wheel over 75 times. Each one is
laser cut to size, hand ground and beveled, flame buffed, and then hand
buffed on the wheel. Then, back into the laser machine for the Vinni
logo, TM and name. They really are magnificent when they are done. If
you play with this pick and are not inspired in some way, then something
is just wrong!
V-Picks Collosal
Over the years I've use a number heavier picks starting with homemade picks laminated from 0.5 mm Dunlops and moving to Wegan gypsy jazz, Fatones and 7's when I found them here at Djangobooks. I've also tried a number of other picks for here, each with interesting and appropriate characteristic depending on your desired sound. I recently started working on Michaels' detailed and comprehensive books Gypsy Picking and Gypsy Rhythm. I learned that I have been making a mistake by holding the pick with a "death grip" between my fingertips. The 8.85mm thickness of the Colossal makes it easy to maintain a proper relaxed grip, the point has a sharp, clear attack, and with the pick rotated towards the flat, it has made the execution of the subtle upstroke on beats 1 & 3 of the la pompe much easier. I have come to view the pick as a crucial part of the sound producing system, much like the bow of a violin and so the price is money well spent. When I played with cheap thin picks, they would wear out and I would lose them frequently. I hang on to these gypsy picks and they last for years. As always, Michael's service was excellent with my order shipping promptly.
