Jazz Gitan Trio
A rare PHilly area appearance by an amazing Gypsy Jazz band. The RFQ is one of the top Gypsy Swing bands on the scene at this time. Their mission; to keep the spirit of Gypsy jazz alive and expanding in today’s musical universe. The virtuosic foursome, named for a Django Reinhardt tune, offers up a newly minted sound, influenced by the classic Hot Club of France, yet wholly contemporary. Led by violinist Jason Anick & guitarist Olli Soikkeli, the quartet performs dynamic and lyrical arrangements of both Gypsy jazz standards and original compositions that draw upon diverse styles. Their last two shows here were SRO, so reserve your seat ASAP! [BTW, The HCPhilly is hosting the show at the Venetian Club. We only rent the space from them, so questions should be directed to Barry Wahrhaftig, not the venue].
Back at the tres chic Paris Bistro. Phyllis Chapell-vocals, Jim Stager-bass, Barry Wahrhaftig guitar & vocals, Joseph Arnold-violin, Dan Pearce-guitar. If you can’t get to Paris to experience the atmosphere of a Bistro with live Gypsy Jazz and a French Chanteuse, this is very close! No cover, no minimum $7 added to your check]. We will be there from Oct 27-30, with some variation in the line up and hours. Check HCPhilly website for details.
Seattle gyspy jazz band Ranger and the “Re-Arrangers” will celebrate the release of their fourth CD, “Swing 16” with a concert of all the songs on the album. Copies of the new CD will be available.
The album features thrilling solos on 4 different instruments—violin, mandolin, clarinet, and saxophone—plus a few fun vocal numbers mixed in! Highlights include two compositions by Django Reinhardt, two of Ranger’s unique originals, and two beautiful traditional waltzes.
The Hot Club Of San Francisco goes Fab! The venerable Gypsy Swing Combo interprets The Beatles on the gorgeous new album ‘John, Paul, George & Django. It was only a matter of time before guitarist Paul Mehling focused his creative mojo on Lennon and McCartney’s vast and enduring treasure trove of songs. The founder and guiding spirit of the Hot Club of San Francisco, America’s longest running Gypsy swing ensemble, Mehling was first inspired to pick up a guitar when the Beatles launched the British Invasion via Ed Sullivan’s show on Feb. 9, 1964. Now Mehling’s HCSF is recolonizing the Fab Four’s songbook in the name of Gypsy jazz legend Django Reinhardt with John, Paul, George and Django, a ravishing and consistently revelatory reimagining of classic Beatles tunes. ‘We’ve been road testing arrangements and tune selections for several years and it’s just gold,’ Mehling says. ‘These tunes were really well crafted, and our job is to present the songs through our prism. Our vision can be summed up as WWDD?: What Would Django Do? What if he hadn’t died, and had lived long enough to interpret Beatles songs? Because you know he totally would have.’

Gypsy jazz musicians from around Puget Sound will celebrate Django Reinhardt’s 107th birthday with an evening of music. The party will be hosted by two bands, Hot Club of Seattle and Ranger and the ‘Re-Arrangers’. Other top Seattle Gypsy Jazz musicians will make guest appearances.
Django was an itinerant Gypsy who earned international acclaim in the 1930’s. Many of his compositions became jazz classics and he is considered one of the top guitar soloists of all time. Duke Ellington referred to Django as “the most creative jazz musician to originate anywhere outside the United States.” Decades later, Jerry Garcia said, “Even today, nobody has really come to the state that he was playing at…nobody plays with the whole fullness of expression that Django had.”
Hot Club of Seattle is led by guitarist/singer Jim Char and features a blend of Django tunes, ballads, latin, and swing jazz from the Great American Songbook. Ranger and the ‘Re-Arrangers’ feature violinist Ranger Sciacca. In September, they performed at Djangofest Northwest. Says Sciacca: “Our goal is to make this a really fun show, featuring as many great Gypsy jazz players as we can.”
