Fapy Lafertin: Reverie

I was fortunate to study with Fapy Lafertin for a year. He is a master of the Gypsy jazz style, but also is skilled in playing straight ahead jazz, baroque, and Portuguese Fado. A transcription of the main theme to Reverie appears in my book Unaccompanied Django as Etude #3.

This video displays his mastery of Django’s music. Watch his right hand closely for a classic example of the Gypsy Picking technique. For more Fapy Lafertin check out his CDs Fleur Dennui ,Fine and Dandy, Django! A Tribute to Django Reinhardt, Live at the AB, and Hungaria.

Fapy also appears on the Django Legacy DVD.

Matelo Ferret and Boulou Ferre: Chez Jaquet

Matelo Ferret was one of the central figures in the history of Gypsy jazz. He was the youngest of the guitar playing Ferret family which included Sarane Ferret and Baro Ferret. They all served an apprenticeship accompanying Django, and later had careers of theirs own.

This clip, which was shot at the yearly Django Reinhardt festival in Samois, France, shows Matelo playing the waltz Chez Jaquet which was composed by Django. For the music to this waltz and many other of Django waltzes, see the book: Django Reinhardt  Undiscovered – Inedit. Matelo is accompanied by his son Boulou Ferre, who is one of the premier Gypsy jazz guitarists today.

For more Matelo Ferret see his CD: Tziganskaia and Other Rare Recordings 1960-1978 and Manouche Partie.
