Schnuckenack's "Pope" violin

In the "Starpoint" album liner notes, it says that Schnuckenack Reinhardt was given a violin by Pope Paul VI in 1965 with a personal dedication. It also says he would play it only on festive occasions (festivals & pilgrimages), but never to make money. Anyone know what happened to this "Pope" violin? I'm certain it is a treasure for the family. But, it would also seem a great item for a museum to help keep the memory of Schnuckenack and his music alive. He really did so much by recording many of the traditional songs that are played today.

This Turkish violinist is a fierce and original player :^) Here he is at a Paris club--probably playing unfamiliar music with people he doesn't know. Its a little shaky [especially the rhythm guitar] but IMO really fine.

Learning gypsy violin?

Hi, just want to ask if learning the violin is really that difficult? I've been playing gypsy guitar for a couple of years now, and have been playing small gigs every now and then. I've managed to recruit other musicians to the gypsy style, but we are having difficulty finding a violinist and bassist. That said, I decided to learn to play violin, however, I don't know how to read music. Will that be a problem? Is there a 'gypsy approach' to learning violin as it is with the guitar? Basically, learning arpeggios, licks etc? I don't plan to be paganini-esque, just play melodies and maybe simple improv. Just to give our group a different tone when playing. As it stands, we are 3 guitarists and a trombone player

Can anyone recommend recordings by this artist? I was absolutely knocked out by his playing on Petite Fleur on the Swing Gitan CD "Sweet Home" (Alfonso's guitar playing is killer too) but can't find much else in the way of recordings. I believe he is the violinist here:

Hey folks, I picked up a violin a couple months ago and I was wondering if there are any gypsy jazz specific resources for beginning violin players. All I've seen on this forum is a post from Michael from 9 years ago and I was hoping there might be something new since then

Outside of resources, does anyone have any advice about how I should go about studying the violin? All the great gypsy players seem to have learned by ear. Should I just start trying to learn solos? That seems like it would be painfully slow-going since I'm new to the instrument. Any suggestions are welcome.
