Junk Tailpieces

Can anyone suggest where to get the most heavy duty Selmer style tailpiece? Three have broken on me and always right where it bends over the body of the guitar. Twice it happened right before a gig. Any suggestions would be helpful - my guitar is supposedly high end and I take care of it so this is really an unacceptable problem!

Thanks,

Tom

Get in touch with Tony Hughes over at the Yahoo gypsyjazzguitar group-actually, I think he's a member here as well, but not so active; check the member list. He had this exact problem (I think it had to do with a misplaced screw in the tailpiece that was screwing up the distribution of force) and finally found a solution. If I remember right he dealt with a British luthier...Kelly something, maybe?

    Good luck,
    Jack.

Michael Dunn makes his own brass tailpieces - they look like they could tow a '55 Buick. He has a website. http://www.michaeldunnguitars.com/pics/tailonangle.jpg

Also - there are some wooden tailpiece alteratives. Bernard Lehman in the USA has a website. http://www.lehmannstrings.com/images/pi ... ail_fr.jpg

and Jean Pierre Favino in France - never have seen a website of his. http://www.stringphonic.com/Images/jpfavinobody.jpg

By the way - I loved Hot Gypsy Nights - great album. Actually, it's playing on my stereo right now... that's just almost too weird of a coincidence. You and your piano player both make wonderful use of non-chordal tones in this song. (Nuits...) It's unusual for GJ but works great... it moves things forward but with respect for the form. I also liked Birelli's album "Move" for similar reasons
You get one chance to enjoy this day, but if you're doing it right, that's enough.

If I remember right, Dunn (and maybe Favino) only makes tailpieces for his own instruments-not as something you can buy separately.

    Best,
    Jack.
