Hi guys

I was just wondering what everyone on here does in gig situations when amplifying their violin. The reason behind this is that I've decided to start looking at electric violins; til now I've been using a Barcus Berry 3100 pickup, but I've never been very happy with it - and microphones never seem to satisfy. Just wanted some opinions from others!

    Have you ever used the L. R. Baggs pick up? I got one a few years ago along with the Para Acoustic DI and it's been working pretty well for my sound. No feed-back and it actually sounds like a violin... imagine that. =)

    I have been searching for a good amplified sound for swing playing for 20 years. I had the Barcus-Berry pickup and a Peavey amp with various EQ boxes. The sound was pretty harsh. Then I got the Baggs bridge pickup. That was better. I changed amps to a Polytone. That was better yet. I had the Baggs preamp for a year or so but then I tried the Yamaha SG Stomp, which is made for a guitar but gives me a great sound. I get comments all the time how great it sounds. The fiddle itself is a mellow, dark sounding instrument. And I soaked the bridge in mineral oil once about 10 years ago. I also have added a small piece of maple to the bridge as a very small mute that is always there. (I have lots of volume acoustically so this is no problem). When I first got the AG-Stomp, I tried a few combinations of settings (there are lots of possibilities) and settled on one which I never change. That's my sound now!

    Buy it. None better. My guitarist has one and I am saving for one. I use the Roland AC 60.

    I've been happy with a Realist pickup and an AER Compact 60. For more power, I use a California Blonde II. For really heavy situations, I have a Design and Harmonie instrument.

    Amplifying a violin depends a lot on whom you're playing with. If you have a drumset and 8-speaker bass cabinet behind you, then you probably need an electric fiddle.

    I heard Elana James (Hot Club of Cowtown) getting a great violin tone with (I think) Baggs pickup and AER 60, with no mic or line out of the AER -- sounded great in a school auditorium.

    Have you tried out a DPA 4061 mic. Should be able to attach to violin on outer edge of upper bout and use the gooseneck to position for best tone. It's a mini cap omni condensor mic.

    Works really well on guitar and reso .... worth giving a try (or rent for month)if you have a cooperative music store.
    The Magic really starts to happen when you can play it with your eyes closed

    I think Gary Schulte uses one [Twin Cities Hot Club]. He was getting a good on-stage sound when I heard him last year.
