Lets talk about tuning machines. I'm in the market and know what I want but I would like some info from you all about the tuners you like and why.

I got Waverly three-on-a-plate ones with ivoroid buttons on my Collins and I'm very pleased. You can see them here:

Schallers come standard on most handmade selmacs it seems, but I got mixed reports on them. I considered getting closed tuners on the grounds that Maccaferri used them, but I couldn't find any that looked the part, except for Eimers' gorgeous repros, which I just couldn't justify the cost of. (Thanks to the exchange rate, they would have been over $300.) He has a great page about them:

These would be my ideal. I've been told that the DR's don't work so well. That's hearsay, of course, like the remarks on the Schallers; I'm just saying what informed my decision.

The Waverlies are beautiful to look at and work perfectly. And after pricing the Eimers ones, I felt like I was getting a bargain!

Josh - re: our phone conversation - I just got of my lazy arse and checked - Grover makes a slotted peghead version of those high-mech tuners too. I don't know if GJ guitar headstocks are special in any way - but if these fit - they may be a good go. I tuned up a Greven Prarie-State with a set of the non-slotted and it was smooooooth... and way accurate. I think Greven loosens the screw and oils them a little; which is just good hygene for tuners anyway - but suffice it to say - they were nice. And - the punchline is that theyr'e under $30.

Those are nice but I'm looking for something that looks better. I don't like the knobs. Ya I know... get over it. But the reason I'm replacing the ones I have now is because I don't like the way they look. They work fine. In fact they are good tuners. I just think they look like shite. So.. now the cat is out of the bag. My vanity is lived out vicariously through my guitar. However I do want tuners that work well and look good. The Waverlys are high on my list. Those look nice. A little Bluegrass or Mandolin looking but nice. I like the fact that you can buy parts. That means they would last forever. Any way.. Keep the suggestions rolling in. I like the dialogue.

Hey Josh,

Don't know what guitar you are looking for tuners for, however... the Gotoh three on a plate, fit the most of the slotted heads out there.

They are inexpensive, (about 50 bux), 16:1, and do a great job.

Those look nice. I like them. The guitar I'm going to install them on is a Patenotte 256. I'm sure I'll have to do some custom work on the head stock slots to get any tuner to fin. Every measurement on that guitar is odd. I guess that is why it sounds like it does!

Yes I have and those are the tuners I was referring to when I said "I know what I want..." I just don't want to spend $300.00 if there is anything at all about them that people don't like. I need to get the measurements so I can see if they will even fit my head stock. If any one has the DR tuners and would like to take the time to measure them that would be cool. I can always get that information from Jacques but if you have and can post it would be cool for others to see as well.

I'm mildly curious about either DM or DR.

The Grovers that Bob referred to that are on the StewMac site are the same tuners used on the newest DellArte Pigalle. Note the 18:1 ratio. They don't look very traditional. I like the 3-on-a-plate design better also.

I have Gotoh on two guitars which seem to work fairly well. They are open-back design with ivoroid buttons; not like the ones ronzo refers to. They were also cheap.

I thought about Waverlys some time back...

hey Ted, have you seen these tuners listed on Jacques' site for Duponts? If so, or if your Dupont has them, any idea if they are better tuners or simply cosmetic (I'm guessing cosmetic from the description)?
