Is anyone in L.A. going to see Paris Combo at Fais Do Do on Wed. night?

Hey Rod, how was the show? Potzi in good form, I trust?

The show was pretty good. I've seen them six times now, and this one was at the bottom of the list as far as energy goes, but I think that was the fault of the half-interested Hollywood crowd and an idiotic schedule that stuck another band (and a bad one at that) into the space between their two sets. Potzi was in fine form. He's a hell of a rhythm player and I love when he plays the North African sounding stuff, but I'm not as into his solos as I once was. Sometimes he pulls out these great melodies, but he's also prone to falling into familiar patterns and attempting but failing technically daunting runs. Still, his failures are often more interesting than other guitarists' successes, and I think that the way he and the rest of the band have modernized older French music is brilliant.

The more I see them, the more I'm impressed with Mano, the bassist. He's so solid rhythmically, his bass lines are economic but still interesting, and his tunes always have a neat little twist in them somewhere.
