Classical music and show music used to be much more popular. Whenever I'm home and I play a jazz standard my mom comes in and can sing all the lyrics from memory. She was doing Body and Soul the last time I was home. She's 79, she was a little prior to the Beatles so heard all those standards on the radio. I don't think they were super cool versions, maybe white singers, but the tunes were in the air.
A lot of these tunes are coming up or already passed 100 years. It's like the equivalent of music that was from the 1890s when I was a kid. They hold up well.
Anyway I need to check out Sven.
Also I think I mentioned but I think plenty of audiences were shitty back in the day too. Maybe they were more participatory shitty and rude instead of checked out as people are now. But in particular I think of Bill Evans, Sunday at the Village Vanguard, if I remember, you can hear people talking in the background through a lot of it.
