Tiny’s Exercise

Outside of our first love I know, but does anyone have the chart or know the changes to Tiny Grimes’ “Tiny’s Exercise”? I’ve listened to a number of different recordings and just can’t hear the changes that well. Thanks in advance.

edited to add: I know I can come up with something close based on the arps Art and Tiny are playing, but wanted to see if there is a chart somewhere. Real and Fake books don’t have it.

Chordify will get you in the ballpark to get started transcribing it. It's not perfect but can be a helpful tool to sketch out a tune and then fill in the blanks as you go. It sounds like the harmony pretty closely follows each line/arpeggio.

voutoreenie - YouTube algo delivered it to me couple years back. I spend an inordinate amount of time listening to it.

Didn’t know about chordify. That’s awesome, thanks JasonS.

Check out this modern version (no guitars - spoiler):

Listening to the King Cole Trio version, I hear the bass moving along the Bb maj scale and guitar would probably comp a harmonized scale chords, or something along those lines:

    Bb C/ D Eb/ D C/ Bb F/ Bb C/ D Eb D C/ Bb

Then there's that mid section where bass is moving chromatically, guitar chords would be all major except the F7:

    Bb B/ C B/ Bb / Bb /Bb B/ C B/ Bb / F /

The second half of the main melody repeats, vamps on F7 for a couple of bars before going into the solos. Which I hear as rhythm changes. That's the gist of it I think.

Okay, so this is cool. I emailed Jacob Zimmerman, the sax player in the last video I posted. (Super nice cat, btw)

He told me someone recently sent him an original chart, purportedly in Tiny's own hand!
