I had the M01 and have played several of the models including the M. Like others have said they're okay but not great. I have never liked the neck carves and don't find them all that inspiring to play. That said they do have an agreeable tone and most of them I've played have been loud enough hold up in a jam. I think if I was starting out again I'd lean towards Stringphonic over Altamira. I've seen a lot of great deals on used Stringphonic guitars.
That's a good point! There was a time when the Yen to USD conversion rate was VERY advantageous for Americans, making the Stringphonic guitars not much more expensive than Altamira when purchased directly from Japan. I'm not sure if that's still the case and it may not have any relevance to Europe anyway. If the price disparity is large it may not be worth comparing the two makers.
I tested the three entry level Altamiras (M, M01 and 01F) and for me, the M01 was the sole which had the typical dynamic response we expect from GJ guitars. M and 01F were nice instruments but, in my opinion, too warm/smooth, especially for comping. I bought then a M01 as a secondary guitar.
