New Selmer branded guitars incoming..?

The official Instagram profile for Henri Selmer Paris just posted a photo of a new guitar case with the Selmer logo and the caption “save the date, 04/24/25.” Any thoughts?

Yes they're coming. Not sure who's actually building them or how much they are. It'll be great to find out what they're like!!!

A friend was speculating that behind these recent videos about Selmer guitars history is intent to go into production. Something that Angelo said in the last video gave him a hint. Do you know something more, Jamie?

Just what's being talked about by a few luthiers on Facebook (urgghhh, can't believe I'm on Facebook again - I took myself away for a few years, then crept back!)

The question is: what makes a genuine Selmer? Why is it a 'Selmer'? So many nice guitars around. What will make this different? Some aren't convinced. I remain intrigued and would love to hear that they are indeed amazing instruments.

That's really interesting. I feel like they'd have to be built by someone who is already a known name in the Selmer style guitar world. Which, at that point, what will make these guitars different from what that builder was already building?

Ha, as much as I'm here, I have zero interest for FB or any other Internet social outlets.

They don't have to convince anyone to anything. They'll either build good guitars or they won't. What Jason said though, I wonder if they'll build a production line themselves and hire people, or commission someone to build with a Selmer logo? I'd think the only thing that makes sense is the former. Otherwise, to me it sounds silly to build up this expectation. Another thing I wonder is, whether the new guitars will affect the vintage market in any way...of course there will lots of comparing between new and old. Angelo said in the recent video that there's lots of good luthiers but there's no one like Selmer. But that doesn't mean much to me. This is going to be a new company that will need to prove itself. More so then another luthier would be expected, because of their revered history. So the stakes are high for them. Nothing other than a total excellence will be enough. I'm glad they're doing it, they should've done it much sooner.

Reminds me of the more recent so-called "D'Angelico" and "D'Aquisto" guitars, which are nothing more than inexpensive guitars which are sold under trademarks of venerated luthiers of the past.

The cheap guitars have not diminished the market value of the originals.

But, in an interesting twist, the original Selmers were factory-made, and the new "copies" might or might not be hand made by someone like Barault. Or, they might be made in a new "Selmer factory"!

My guess would be it's going to be a high end line. Compared to recently resurrected brands, Loar, D'Angelico etc... I think the pricing will in line with other fine luthier made guitars in France.

I can't think of any "vintage" guitars values that got hurt by newer versions, Fenders, Gibsons etc. I think the newer Fenders are better than the old ones but one is buying history when you purchase a "vintage" instrument.

We only have to wait until the 24th when they'll be revealed. Exciting!!!

The ones that might be hurt are the Jean Barault Selmers made around the time of Django's centenary the last time Selmer toyed with making guitars again, there are about 10 of those and they tend to get listed for about 10K, which is well-over what Jean charges for his non-branded Selmer replicas. Their main selling point is that they are the only official Selmers made since the originals.

This has been rumoured for a little while with both JB and ALD mentioned as the luthiers. It will be interesting to see what the angle is as one luthier can't do more than produce a handful a year unless they have a team under them. The other thing they could do is ask a bunch of luthiers to produce guitars under the Selmer brand, then we would have a choice of having a Barault Selmer, an AJL Selmer, a Dupont Selmer etc.

Anyway, like most folk on Facebook debating this, I'm deeply cynical about the whole exercise. There's little connecting these guitars to the original Selmers outside of a few logos and a specious claim of authenticity.

    Now, where do I pay?
