Fingerpicking Gypsy-jazz

Hey everybody
I am a flamenco/classical guitarist but recently I have started to get into some gypsy grooves. I'm just wondering if you think it is possible to play gypsy jazz fingerpicking instead of using a pick. I know it is not the regular way but I can't see why it wouldn't work.

I find i use the thumb and pointer combination more than anything but I am only a very part time finger player. I love the attack of the pick so went that route in spite of classic training.
