After shimming, my Dell Arte is at 3.5 mm at the low E and a bit under 3 mm at the high E. When I purchased it, it was 1.5 - 2 mm

A Gitane DG-300 with proper action is a loud and good guitar.

I would agree with Heretic on this. His DJ-300 is a dream to play and sounds wonderful.

Like I said, I also raised the action on my DG 300 by putting the spare bridge I had sitting around on it and it transformed it into an entirely different guitar. Unfortunately, the spare bridge puts the action a bit too high so I need to file the bridge down about a mm.

The difference is so astonishing i can hardly believe.

I created shims from rosewood veneer. I got a couple of sheets from Luthiers Mercantile International (http://www.lmii.com/) and cut the shims to match the contact points on the bridge. Works well as I can adjust the action with humidity changes.

I found the same thing about getting your bridge right.
    Hey Anthony,

Here is a link to Josh's "Fitting your Bridge Post" very well explained and easy.

Thanks guys, this has been very helpful.

I was meeting this problem from the other end. I had very high action on my guitars and I was used to it. The sound was good too. The I started doing some of my right hand exercises and work on phrasing on an old parlor guitar with non gypsy action. It had its advantages.

I shaved and refit the bridge on my Asian made guitar, which is a nice guitar for the money by the way, and the action is still about 3.5 mm. I used an automotive feeler gauge to measure the height. I guess I can't say what it did to the sound because I "dialed in" the intonation when I replaced the bridge and that always makes a huge difference.

I think the video that Bob Holo did for Patrus about setting up a GJ guitar was on the money.
