  The odd pattern on the back appear to be real wood of some type. The same pattern appears on the inside if you peer through the sound hole and you can see texturing on the wood's surface that follows the contours of the curves shapes, so it is not some sort of dye job.
  
  It's interesting that the sides also have a very strange pattern, but it is not the same pattern.
