There's a joke I heard a few times, even on different continents I believe because I think I remember someone telling it to me way back when I still lived in Bosnia. And I know I heard it from different people at least a couple of times here in States. Except I don't think it's a made up joke. I think it's a real life anecdote.

It goes something like this (but it's somewhat hard to tell it in words): a person asks some Eastern European musician: man how do you guys play those rhythms with such ease, they sound soooo complicated?"
The musician replies: no it's easy, listen it's just 4; 1___2_3______4 (singing whatever complicated time signature they're talking about and making appropriate rests to fit into 4 beats).
