finger board extensions on a d hole. Why??

Curious why builders still mess around with this. I kind of hate having things blocking the sound hole. Anything above the 19th fret is above my pay grade anyways.

How common is it for folks to trim it off? On something like a Nomade would that decrease the value, assuming the work was clean?

I’m not sure if you can tell in this pic, but Antoine Boyer actually added a fret to his guitar. So some people want them!

that seems tasteful. having the fingerboard stick out past the soundboard just seems tacky. Like when some one bolts a spoiler on to the back of their '92 honda accord

I mean, didn't all the original 12 fret Macs have a fretboard extension or am I mistaken?

I made a classical guitar with a 24 fret neck...I'm ok with it.

I mean they are cool if you want the other frets. I think they look great, generally.

I've seen guitars only fretted to the 12th fret for people who don't want to play high. That's cool too.

Paul, I actually like the shape of your fretboard extension on this guitar as it is in harmony with the angled soundhole and the angle of the scalloped cutaway. Definitely thoughtful design and probably necessary for that build. Had you squared it off near the last full fret, I think it would have looked awkward. (And hit the thumbs up for anyone else that clicked on the right arrow expecting to see more pictures 😂)

On my guitars, and I assume the other guys who are making adjustable necks (Craig and Josh), the high notes really sing. I don't know exactly what the mechanics are but I feel fairly certain that not having the fingerboard glued to the top but instead part of the neck makes the high notes really usable.

I did show that guitar to a really high end classical player who was kind of non-plussed by all of that. He's so used to reaching around the shoulder that the cutaway didn't really appeal to him. Kinda funny. He liked the sound of the guitar. He said I should make a more normal version of it, which I never did. And the repetoire is the repetoire, so not much use for a high E. I still think it's a cool guitar though.

Esthetically I like the look of the fretboard extension on a D hole but it is very impractical. You have this large opening that should give you access to do anything inside and then you cover it up. I said this elsewhere, if it was my guitar, as long as it's not a high value instrument, I'd cut it flush with the soundhole.

I agree it is difficult on a 12 fret DJ guitar to contort your fretting hand to play those e&b string extensions so not usable. Josh Hegg told me back in '07 making an intonation perfect bridge, "Your lucky that extension on your '94/95 Gitane D500 hasn't arched up interfering with lower note buzz or playability. However, I don't have any internal pickups or wiring. Even though it's not a high value instrument I won't cut off the extension as it is part of the original Italian luthier design.
