Voicings tool I built for myself – try it out and tell me what you think

I’ve been

exploring tools to help with chord voicings lately, and got frustrated with how much time it takes to find playable positions and inversions that work well for comping – especially when experimenting with different shapes for the same chord or smooth transitions.

So I built a simple web app called VoicyLab that shows every possible fingering for any four notes on the fretboard, with a “Next” button to cycle through options and flexible search for easier, more practical shapes.

Still early beta – works well for most chords, some parts manual but diagrams are accurate.

If anyone wants to try it and let me know what could be useful for Gypsy jazz comping or repertoire – lifetime access is $39 (all future updates free forever).

Thanks for any feedback – really want to make this useful for the community.

Thanks for this - it's not clear from your post but the beta is currently free to try so I've just given it a go. It's a clever little app, I had fun playing with it. I can imagine this will be a useful tool for jazz guitarists looking to delve into that Mick Goodrick approach to comping. I think even Goodrick might struggle with some of the fingerings though so you might want to look at including a filter to limit the number of frets that a chord shape spans over or some other way of getting rid of impractical shapes. Used properly this could be a very creative tool. The only other piece of feedback I can offer is the price, I'm sure that the amount of work you've put into this is worth it but in the real world I don't think there will be a big market for the app at this price sadly.

I can't see this being much use to the gypsy jazz community, we tend to use idiomatic shapes and inversions, there's always that guy at a jam who plays lots of clever inversions but he tends to get sharp looks from everyone else! I think you'd have to put in some significant adaptations to make it work for us.

I was a little confused about the original post, honestly. Now that I understand that it's a companion to Mick Goodrick's book (Creative Chordal Harmony), at least in the current version, now I understand.

Wow, thanks so much for the detailed feedback, really appreciate you taking the time to try it out!

You're spot on about some of the fingerings. I wrestled with the fret span limit and settled on up to 6 frets based on my own playing, but I totally get that some shapes are more theoretical than practical. The ranking already puts the most compact/easiest ones first, but adding a dedicated "max fret span" filter is a great idea. definitely putting it on the list for the next update.

On the price... I hear you. $39 is for lifetime access and all future updates, but it's free to try forever. The market is niche, but for players diving into Goodrick style comping I hope it'll feel worth supporting.

As for gypsy jazz, fair point! The tool is built around Goodrick's ideas, which is more modern jazz territory. Still, your feedback was super valuable, so it was worth posting here just for that!

    Thanks again!

    Thanks Buco!

Glad it makes more sense now :)

It's inspired by Goodrick's cycle approach (mainly the Voice Leading Almanac series, but the spirit is similar to Creative Chordal Harmony)
