Transcribing question

hey folks,

When you transcribe Django's music, do you base your fingerings off of Django's likely approach, or write for what you find comfortable?

As I read through transcriptions online, I find myself reluctantly reading the tab over notation, realizing how important accurate fingering is to the style. I'd like to continue transcribing on my own (which I do anyways), but don't really want to teach myself bad habits in my initial approach to playing this style of music.

    I'm certainly no expert but my take is that I think he used some different techniques to get around only using 2 fingers mostly. So I think some of his ideas actually work better if you use his fingering (2 fingers). Conversely, some are easier if you use 3 or 4 fingers so I just try to do what works for me while getting the pitches (obviously) and phrasing to sound right. Also, after you do a bunch of them and looking at other published transcriptions you start to recognize and or figure out what I would call 'standard' phrases or positions or ways to move horizontally/vertically that are comfortable and efficient.
  • Unless one has spent a lot of time practicing his style most transcriptions with fingering are someone's interpretation or comfort zone
