Starting a phrase with a downstroke?

Is it always true you have to start a phrase with a downstroke? It feels odd sometimes, especially if the phrase begins on the upbeat.

  • Depends on what you are going to next

If I have an offbeat/upbeat fist note and then a sweep or couple of downstrokes I will start with an up at higher speeds

Downstrokes almost exclusively at low speed common sense at all times
The Magic really starts to happen when you can play it with your eyes closed
