Let's get crackin!

OK, I'm just back from my Canary Islands cruise- fun!--- and now I'm ready to get crackin'!

During the cruise I re-recorded 128 files of Givone's CD to make them more user friendly, and I've now uploaded them all to our group DropBox.

If you would like, as a couple of members have now done, to join our group and access the 'DropBox', please e-mail me and tell me the two words at the top of page 14 of the Givone book.

PS In order to get the 'looping' and 'slowdown' functions for these files, you're going to have to open them using QuickTime. You can get QuickTime for free for Mac or Windows at:

http://support.apple.com/downloads/#quicktime

Once you've opened the desired file using QuickTime, use "Command-L" to make the exercise loop over and over, and "command-K" to get the menu to slow it down to the desired tempo.

You can also change the key using that same "command-K" menu, if you want to practise some of the fingerings in different fretboard positions.

  • Just a quick note...these functions do not appear to work with the newest version of quicktime.

Thanks, jkaz... can you recommend an older version of QuickTime that would be better? Because I notice at the Apple download site they have lots of older versions.

On my Mac, I'm told that I'm using version 7.6.6 (1789) and it works fine.

I don't know much about Windows machines; I've always been a Mac user.

Hopefully either you or some kind Geek God who may be lurking out there, can solve whatever tech issues are bedevilling us?

    Thanks,

    Will

  • Transcribe is really the best program for this.

    Jim, is Transcribe free?

And how difficult would it be to take the 128 files I've already created and turn them into Transcribe files?

  • Will,

No, it isn't free. It is free to try, but it sells for roughly $40US.

I used to an earlier version of quicktime to slow down tracks until I bought a new computer which came with a new version of quicktime. I bit the bullet and bought quicktime and it is my most used learning device. You don't have to save the file as a slowed down version.

Alternatively, the VLC player, which is free, does slow down tracks. The caveat is that it does it in pre-defined intervals.

OK, well, for now why don't we just stay with the free (ie older) version of QuickTime, which is still available online?

I don't want to discourage anybody from joining the group because they have to purchase the Givone book and then buy additional software on top of that.

We may revisit this issue in the future if other people join the group and have strong feelings about it... but being a devout cheapskate, I still hope that whatever software we settle on will be at the popular price of $0.00

  • No problem, Will.
