Django's pickup?

I assume, people have already talked about this, but I just noticed it.
What is Django using here? It not a Stimer I guess.
What were the options available at the time?

And what is the box on the chair in front of him? Looks like electronics of some sort. Amplifier?

He's using a bigtone, amplifed with lunchbox... obviously!
The clarinetist really likes the white shoes as you can tell.

Yes we have discussed this before and the most suprising thing is that this photo was taken late 1944 or early 1945. It is most likely that the pick-up (contact mic??) and amp were brought over by American servicemen. - Perhaps Baro Ferret got them on the black market!!! - Django tried several amplification set-ups before the US tour.

Haha! Maybe it's something like this one. I don't know the make but it's a period pickup circa around 1940's. Actually sounds pretty damn loud and good! AE
