Hi,

Heard bit of Thomas Dutronc playing and singing what i assume are his songs with various people, There some particualy good stuff with him and Bereli and with Angello Debarre.

All good stuff, and i like his style for writing gypsy swing songs.

Any albums of him that are worth getting , or things he has done people can recomend? I see he is playing with Rosenberg trio at samois which should be interesting

cheers

Will

He's a reasonably good player and singer. His tunes are catchy and the humor is reminiscent of his father's tongue-in-cheek songs from the 1960's. He surrounds himself with top notch players and his live show (I only saw one on DVD) is fun, mixing GJ with rock, pop, even disco music. With regards to his albums, he's only got 2 so far. I would say get the first one "Comme Un Manouche Sans Guitare" which is the more GJ-influenced of the two. It came out of years hanging out with the cream of the French GJ players and road-testing his songs at festivals and small venues, so it's a more accomplished effort with real flair and little to no pressure to conform to any style. The second CD "Silence On Tourne" feels like a typical sophomore effort, i.e. more consistent in style but less inspired, and definitely less GJ sounding.

    I hope this helps.

    Guillaume
