Green felt under the tailpiece?

What is the purpose of the green felt I have seen under the tailpiece on some gypsy jazz guitars? I've noticed some have it, some don't. My Barault D hole does not.

I alwways replace the felt with Chamois leather which I extend to cover the whole of the back of the tailpiece. I dislike the colour of red felt and don;t like the green colour either so it's partly an aesthetic reason but there is also the practical aspect of protecting the top and edge of the guitar and I believe/suspect it it also cuts down overtones and ringing - sometiems described as "wetness" - on some guitars
