Darkest strings?

I play a Saga Gitane D-hole guitar, and I'm increasingly dissatisfied with the bottom end of this guitar. (Well, it's fine as part of an ensemble, but sounds increasingly thin to my ears when played solo.)

Any string recommendations to get a bit more beefiness out of the low register?

I've used John Pearse Nuages up till now.

Also, am I right in thinking that higher gauge strings ought to produce a bigger tone?

thanks

For a darker, rounder tone silk and steel strings are generally your best bet. These are the most popular and used by Stochelo Rosenberg:

    Mat,
I've played the short scale guitars for years and years so I'm guessing that when you want a more beefy tone, it isn't that the tone is too thin but too thick.
The short scale D-500 and such tend to have some mush in the low end. Using a softer string will change the tone also towards being softer but you might want a harder and higher tension string or a switch to the longer style guitar.

Good to know about the Gallis. I also prefer a fat, warm, round tone. Don't know about the softer tension (I like it tight). Been using Argies medium guage on my Dell Arte Studio Hommage and am quite happy, but gonna give the Gallis a try next time I order strings.
    Swang on,

For many folks the thin sound in the short scale D holes is in the top strings. They don't have the punch and might not satisfy like their longer necked counterparts.
I guess I'm confused by your choice of words or maybe your guitar or your ears hear something different form the D-500's and other short scale Saga's I've had. If the bottom end on your guitar is thin sounding and not "mushy", I'll just have to get over it.
