Another forgotten hero - Slim Galliard

I've said a lot recently about the importance of fun in music - especially jazz, which has become far too (in my opinion) serious in recent decades. I'm going to start highlighting some of the more exuberant musicians. Why not start with Slim?

Yeah, Slim was out 'a sight. Had a VHS tape with that whole performance at Billy Bergans (Dunkin' Bagels, Laguna a Roonie, etc.) but lost it in a move. Love his overhand piano technique. He literally wrote the book on jive (with his own dictionary). Adept at guitar and piano (and goodness knows what else). Great sense of humor and a super versatile entertainer. He must have had quite a following back in the 40's... on his own and with bass player Slam Stewart (Slim 'n Slam). Would love to see Hellzapoppin' again but it doesn't seem to ever get shown on TV anymore? Thanks for posting.

Never heard of Slim, what an entertainer and musician!

For solid vocal swing you might have already heard of the Delta Rhythm Boys.

You are not going to believe the dance scene at the end.... and is this the start of the mini-skirt? There is nothing this good going on these days!!!

That's awesome. Slim starts it off and then whips out his Gibson ES-150 (unofficial Charlie Christian model). I remember seeing that movie on TV when I was a kid and being blown away. Those dancers cut more than a rug. Why it never pops up on TCM, or other old movie channels remains a mystery. Thanks for posting.
