I play with Wegen Big City Picks and I like them very much. But they're 1.8mm, which is pretty thin ofcourse (I think the Dunlop Primetones come in 5mm!). The Big City's are at $5 a piece very reasonably priced. I think Stochelo uses them too sometimes. I think investing in a good quality pick is very good but.. I've seen people outplay me with stuff like coins, coat buttons, just pieces of plastic..
A friend of mine has some "polymerized animal protein" sheets (the same material used by Red Bear for their picks). I'll use it to make some picks and post some photos in the near future.
Where did your friend get the "polymerized animal protein" sheets from? I have been searching hard for the raw material to make standard shaped picks around 1.5mm in thickness.
The people/person (I don't remember who I corresponded with) at Red Bear are/is great. I had a couple of custom picks made for me over a year ago and they were very accommodating. I mostly use them to play my archtop. I use Wegen picks for everything else. Love them...until I lose one.

I thought I would post a discovery I have made. When I first started gypsy style picking a few years ago I was using a fairly Lage size blue chip TP 2.5 mm pick. After a year of intensive 3-4 hours a day practice I felt the big pick was limiting my picking speed. I then switched to a blue chip large jazz 2.5 mm which is a medium size and over the next year my pick speed picked up and it felt easier even tough I was spending most of my time on sax.
Over the past two weeks while away I got lots and lots of guitar time in and am now at that same point and am ordering a regular size Blue Chip jazz 2.5mm. This is a small pick, smaller than the ones Stochelo uses the brand and model of which my creaking memory has misplaced....about the size of a quarter. When I first tried one a few years ago when I was using the TP it felt tiny.
My grip on the pick is getting looser and looser but the pick is moving around less and less. The jazz large now feels overly large and is restricting the speed again. I will try out the regular size and report back
PS The SR pick reference is Wegen Big City 1.8
Has anyone else noticed this phenomenon .
I get the jazz pick made with a less pointy tip profile. I find them the quietest, smoothest and fastest pick I have yet tried.
