Teaching young children

Hey guys,

First off, I know this board is quite specifically geared toward gypsy jazz but this is such a great community I figured someone might have some general advice for teaching very young beginner guitar players (ages 4 and 5). I have two nephews who just got guitars and I'd like to get them some learning materials but the problem is I have never taught a complete beginner, nor have I ever taught children.

Of course if they decide to stick with it and make some progress, I will slowly make jazz guitarists out of them :) But until then, I really need some advice about how to get them started. First and foremost, can anyone recommend a method book for them to work through? I've looked online and there are so many I just can't get any sense of which would be best.

Thanks!

My kids have been doing Suzuki violin for several years (they are age 5 and 8 now) and have had great success with it. There is also a Suzuki method for guitar. You may find a local teacher versed in it or get a hold of the materials yourself.

I believe the Suzuki method is very good for young children. If im not mistaken, it requires the parents to be involved with the kid's learning process as well.
