Brooklyn's Gypsy jazz scene hosts international event for Hurricane Sandy Relief
Brooklyn, NY, November 14th, 2012 -- In the 1930's and 40's, the Belgian-born Gypsy Django Reinhardt listened to American jazz in Paris and created his own version of swing on the guitar. The style he originated is known as Gypsy jazz.
Django's creation comes across the Atlantic to the Brooklyn Djangology Festival on December 6 & 7 at the Shapeshifter Lab in Park Slope. The festival features local acts including Franglais, the Lower East Side Hot Club, Alouette the Lark, Dallas Vietty's Musette Project, and Raklorom (NYU's Romani ensemble), and brings Swing 39 from Kentucky. Headlining the festival this winter are Titi Bamberger of Germany with Juan Arenales of Spain, and Boston-based violinist Jason Annick with Finnish guitarist Olli Soikkelli. Bamberger, whose family is related to Django's, brings an authentic connection to the European Gypsy jazz tradition.
The festival, curated by Ben Wood and Eve Seltzer of Franglais, will donate the proceeds to the New York City Health and Hospital's Fund for Hurricane Relief. "We had the the festival planned before the storm," says Eve Seltzer, Physical Therapist Assistant at Bellevue Hospital, "but the evacuation of New York hospitals and the displacement of so many people broke my heart. We felt compelled to dedicate our music to those in need."
