I just picked up the CD "3 Temps pour bien faire" by accordionist Marcel Azzola, bassist Patrice Caratini, and guitarist Marc Fosset, out on the Chant du Monde label. It's really fantastic. Musette and jazz are the jumping off points, but boy, do they land in some unusual places. It's very modern but not very dissonant...just harmonically and rhythmically challenging at times. It's also very lyrical. Azzola has technique to spare, but melds it with a strong sense of melody. The compositions are fresh and original, with lots of unusual twists and turns in the chord changes and arrangements. Plus, with one exception, they're all written by band members. Fosset's guitar playing isn't in a Django style, but don't let that deter you; he's a great player with an interesting tone and an excellent ear. Caratini is also excellent, both in his pizzicato and his arco playing. One of the best things about this band is the interplay between the instruments. The role of each instrument is constantly shifting. In one section, the accordion will take the melody, doubled by the guitar and anchored by the bass. Then, seamlessly, the bass with take the lead, with guitar going to rhythm and accordion playing harmony. And so on.
I'd really recommend this CD to anyone who likes Amestoy Trio, Freebidou, Tin Hat Trio, Red Norvo's trio, Guy Klucevsek, or Jo Privat.
