Michael's recording setup

Michael - I really enjoy your demonstrations of the guitars you sell. Very inspiring.

I'd like to know what sort of recording and processing you use. There is a really compressed sound on some of the clips, and I don't know if that is a property of the instrument or if some signal processing is being used. It is very pleasant, whatever it is.

If you are just playing into a mic and straight to 'tape' I'd like to know that too.

Again, thanks for the demos. I've almost reached for my wallet on a number of occasions. Especially the DM-50 Dupont. Oh my..

Thanks for the kind words! Over the years I have used various cameras, mics, and rooms with a variety of settings. Because I do so many of these videos, it's important to use a fairly simple setup even though sometimes its not ideal from an audiophile perspective. Recently, I've just run a pair of condenser mics through a preamp and into the camera. The camera's mic-pre can do some weird things with compression and eq as well as YouTube so it's a bit of a crap shoot how any given one will turn out. A separate audio track would be ideal but I don't have the time to be editing and syncing multiple tracks so this will have to do for now.

    Thanks,

    Michael

What I would really like to see/hear, is a side by side comparison of one of your guitars, in the format you use - some licks, some chords - with a decent flattop, playing the same stuff. I have a lot of friends that are unaware of the differences in sound and would be enlightened.

Since you're not busy, could you just throw that together this evening? :-)

Or maybe someone else on the Forum could do a side-by-side comparison.

Anyway,, just kinda daydreaming about how cool that would be.
