I second Frater's endorsement. Those early Manouche guitars are great for the money.Way better than a Gitane.
I've never been a guitar player, but I've played one on stage.

Stop by The Fretted Frog in Echo Park. They usually have a few Ciganos and Gitanes there, as well as a small assortment of Wegen and Dugain picks.

    Hey J,

You got some good eyes out for you happening.

If I were in L. A. area I would check out that Manouche Moreno model on LA Craigs List for $850.

According to an older thread here I remember reading about the Early Manouche Moreno guitar maybe first 100 being somewhat special. I would think #54 should be worth checking out. I think the case alone is worth $200 to $300.

See if it does it for you.

    Lots of Luck.

Hey J did a search and came up with this thread you may find interesting. Started April of this year.

Wow, you guys are awesome. Thanks so much everybody for the feedback and informastion.

I really wish I could afford that Manouche Moreno. Like really really. But unfortunately there's just no way it's in the budget. I'm thinking maybe a month from now I'll spring for one of the Cigano D-holes. Stuart - I liked your point that getting a more affordable guitar now would give me an excuse to pick up an oval down the line. :) At any rate, I'm going to get to the shop this week and at least try a few out.

In the meantime, I picked up a Wegen pick and Denis Chang's Art of Accompaniment. I definitely want to focus on learning rhythm first and was glad to see it came so highly recommended from you folks.

I had already grabbed the Romane book from Amazon a few weeks ago and found it to definitely be a bit too advanced for me. I wish I would have checked this site first. That's okay, I'm sure it will be a very valuable resource when I get a bit more advanced.

Oh and jonpowl mentioned Gonzalo Bergara! I am actually planning to go to the Claremont folk festival this coming Saturday where he is performing and giving a guitar workshop. I hope it's okay if I attend the workshop and don't try to play, just sit and watch haha. Anyway, more information about the festival is here - http://folkmusiccenter.com/folk-festival/

I have found one other local band - The Hot Club of LA - they play every Monday night at Cinema Bar in Culver City and in June they're playing every Friday night at Areal Restaurant in Santa Monica. I haven't checked them out yet but I hope to soon - https://www.facebook.com/HotClubOfLa

Okay thanks again everybody for being so helpful and making me feel welcome!

    J
