iPod v. Nexus 7?

PassacagliaPassacaglia Madison, WI✭✭✭✭
I don't really know where to put this. I'm out of room on my antequated Walkman. I'd really prefer just to store a billion tunes on something like the iPod Classic, at 160GB, but I've heard so many reports of issues with the hard drive.

On the other hand, if I understand correctly, the Nexus 7, by Google, has a lot going for it. And one can either store online (Dropbox, Cloud, Google Play) or get a wireless hard drive, I think I saw a Seagate at 500 gb.

I don't want anything for the IrealB, etc....just something to store tunes and video I can use for study and enjoyment. What's really tipped the need is I'm going to acquire every Pigalle 44 album. I love Swing for Bop, but cannot believe I've not loaded up on all of their stuff before.

Anyway, need a player.

Thoughts?

    Paul,
I have had the 160 gig Ipod Classic for 5 years and have had no problems.
I have never used it for videos, but for music, it fits the bill.

Thanks, Perltone and Michael. A bandmate offers similar testimony on behalf of his iPod classic. Another one said his tanked and he's never gone back. Part of me just says I should buy a laptop and be done with it. Videos, music, storage....and not much of a walk between my desk and the bed, so I can probably handle the 5 lbs....

    Hey Paul,

    I Love my iPod classic 160 :D
I've had them all, Classics, Touch's, Nano's, for music only go with the larger Classic model.
I believe the Nexus 7 will only hold 32GB but does many other things.

    ENJOY

will hold your entire library and others also.
As with anything there is a learning curve and now to me if mine died I'd get another one.
I like to manage my own library and only load what I want not my entire library.
When loading songs into iTunes I prefer 256 or higher bit rates saved as MP3's and after iTunes imports stuff say Gypsy Jazz I make sure that it has that tag. Down the road you can pick Genres, Gypsy Jazz, Shuffle and cruise on. If you really like a song you can five star it. You build a great five star library. You can also repeat a song as many times as you like. I tend to learn from hearing song till I know the melody and somehow they find there way into my repertoire. There also a feature that you can play your most played songs.
I don't leave home without mine especially traveling trips in the car. If you have any questions or I can help in any way PM me.

Thanks, Pickit. I have 1000's of songs on my PC. Do you know if it can be tricky to get already-existing .mp3s (not on iTunes) loaded onto an iPod?

The other thing I was thinking, the Nexus can either use online storage, or a wireless external hard drive - I saw a Seagate refurbished 500 gb wireless for $90....

  • I have had 2 iPod classics and both lasted about 2 years. When they work they are good. Both of them ended up with problems with the selector button, but whether that was hard drive O/S issue or actual part going. I used them a few hours/day most days and more on some.

    Hey Paul

It's easy to get your existing library into iTunes and then onto your Itunes device. In iTunes go to file click on add to library and click on existing music library on your computer. You may want to set some guidelines in iTunes preferences first. Are you using windows or a Mac computer? You could wind up with copies of the same music in two places. ( not a biggie if you have lots of Hard drive space )
If you want I'll be glad to talk you thru over the phone. Just PM me for my #.

Sounds like if you go with the Nexus you'll need to carry two pieces might make car trips harder.
Don't really have any hands on time with that.

My experience with the old iPod's with hard drives is the drives would give up, I went through three of them. My 64GB iPod Touch with storage on RAM chips, or whatever they call it has worked flawlessly for years. It also connects to the internet via wi-fi (only).

You can store mp3 files from any source on the iPod but you have to add them to iTunes on your PC first to do it (easy, just a drag and drop). (BTW, you can tell iTunes to import songs from CDs as mp3s instead of m4p if you like).

Craig is correct about the Flash memory versus the hard drive issue. I have seen plenty of cracked screens however. May come down to how you care for your tools, toys. No moving parts on the Flash memory. I've been using my classic about 3 years no problems that a reset couldn't fix. I don't jog or play Tennis with it though.
    Always a choice!
If you find a DEAL on either you'll probably be fine.

    good Luck

I saw one on Craigslist here:

    Ipod 7th gen classic style 160 gigs - $130

thats about half price and the 7th generation which is better generation

Thanks, guys. Anyone use online storage (e.g., cloud, something like that) as their means of main storage? Access it so long as wi-fi is available?
