It's difficult to explain without the guitar
But it's the way he's comping with his fingers, adding triplets and 16th notes to the basic rhythm...
Listen to his Blue Eyes-cd where he does something similar on a few introductions.

somehow i missed your Q ben, forgive me!
anyway, x on bass string means thumb pluck,
x on 4 strings = palm percussive effect (smack the palm against the strings)
x on 3 strings = pluck strings with i m and a fingers (index, middle, ring)
you can do the first pattern with ascending octaves.... robin katz is quite fond of that
the second poattern is what andreas is showing me in that pic
