Back to the OP's query about tone and neck wood...
I have never been able to identify a wood species in playing, only by looking... sometimes feel, but no so often.
Others may be more in tune than I.
I favor mahogany because it is homogenous, easy to work and finishes well.
I have been building furniture for 23 years, I do not even think about walnut. It is not attractive to me , I don't like the smell, and I don't care to work it. Other cabinet makers call it "the king of woods"... this seems odd to me because I have also heard mahogany referred to as the king of woods.
