I'm a huge fan too, but not sure that is as good a company as Bireli 8) Discovered him quite by chance. Was in NYC for a weekend and walked by Carnage Hall, saw a poster for this flamenco player, hey, why not? Amazing! The first half of the show was just what you see in the video, just Tomatito and palmas, such an huge, rich sound, filled the entire hall. The second half brought on flamenco singers (an acquired taste) but still the only instrument was Tomatito's guitar, sounded like an orchestra.

Been a fan ever since. I really don't know much about flamenco. I listen to what Pandora has to offer in flamenco players and Tomatito seems one of the best to me. Need to learn more, especially about the various traditional forms. How much of what is played improvised? Much of what I hear does not seem to have a melody as such, more short phrases linked in hypnotic repetition and variation. Are these variations improvised?

Tomatito kicks butt .. I've been listening to him since before I even knew about Django. I bet with a strong rest stroke thumb/wrist like that he could pick up jazz manouche technique in a heartbeat (if he doesn't already).

Thanks for the old vid and reminding me of one of my forgotten goals - learning to do a solid contra palmas like the guys in that clip!!! Such good time

That is really cool. I surfed around in Youtube and found some vocals with him. The vocals sound very middle eastern influence with the micro pitches or whatever they are called???
