gitane dg-250 upgrades?

Hi, ive been a fan of the gypsy style for some time now and just picked up a gitane dg-250 (definitally wasnt my first choice but couldnt say no to the $350 pricetag)
I am very happy with how it feels but has a overtone problem.
Would you guys recommend a dupont bridge?
Would swapping out the tailpiece help any? If so which would be best(nickel, brass)?
Thank you

you may want to use the forum search feature to find some info on bridges, wetness, overtone.

There was a post about breaking in my new DG-300 that touch on MANY of these issues there where many replies and lots of info has already been shared there. Helped a lot with my gitane.

  • Thank you for your responses. I have searched quite a but on here and have read through your thread (interesting but doesn't quite answer what I'm trying to figure out). I'm not new to jazz just these guitars in particular and don't know what helps there sound the most.
after searching I have decided that I will be upgrading my bridge just not sure if there's a better one out there then Dupont?
And with the tailpiece I can't information if that will change the sound noticeably?
    Thanks again

When you mention overtones - is this like the sound you get from sympathetic vibration of the strings between the tailpiece and bridge (aka the "afterlength" in bowed instruments)? This is something most mandolin players deal with by something to physically dampen this part of the strings. A piece of leather woven between and around the strings. The paired strings on mandolin family instruments work great with cheap rubber grommets. On bowed instruments, the design of the instrument is such that the afterlength is 1/6th of the free vibrating length (nut to bridge distance) and for some reason this prevents such problems.

I took some maple stock and cut it to the width of the bridge, then cut a veneer shliver and put it under each of the feet of the Bridge. I then cut some leather and put it under the tailpiece. Totally different and much better sound. Cheap fix that made my DG250 sound better then my DG300 John Jorgenson.

I can take a picture and post later today if you need.
