Django seems to have a Chaplin mustache here. Funny how someone flips the brim on his hat. I knew random clips like this were still out there, seeing how popular Django was and the plethora of photographs taken of him in all kinds of places. It's really a testament to his fame during his lifetime, that he of course embraced and which also let him down in situations like the Nice Jazz Festival, where a proud Django was thoroughly disappointed not having been formally invited.
With the technology back then, the only way we'll ever find film of Django with matching sound is to find one of the TV programmes Django was feautured in, a lost film or short film that we didn't know existed, (some sort of documentary or promotional film, like "Jazz Hot)" or if someone filmed a recording session or perhaps a concert that we also already have sound recordings of. Sometimes they also recorded sound for newsreels, but most often this wasn't the case. Some time ago I went looking for footage of Django and the ATC band, because I knew some army bands were recorded for newsreel- and other purposes. Among them Glenn Miller's legendary lineup. At http://www.criticalpast.com/ you can find footage of an army band concert from March 10, 1945 and with matching sound if you search for "army band". Sadly no Django here, but something similar might have been filmed including Django and the ATC Band?
There are a lot of film footage archives around the world. Django also toured in many countries. Perhaps your country filmed Django at some point?
But perhaps the biggest question right now is; is there more of where Django in Gent came from? Maybe there's 30 seconds more that we haven't seen yet.
Charles Delaunay once said that they filmed 3 more tunes during the Jazz Hot session. I have my doubts on this, and that has to do with how the footage was filmed and put together, but I'll explain that some other time.
