Just looked up your annual climate, Jay - seems wonderful. It's all a moving target for me, as we're learning more about the condition...one thing's for sure, cold and barometric drops are very nasty. I love the Pacific Northwest (man, do I miss the ocean), but unfortunately the green carries with it a lot of rain... :(

  • Green does require rain...anywhere in the world.....at least unlike the rest of Canada we are not all white.....

  • If you are partial to purples and oranges, New Mexico is lovely

One of the best drives I've had was crossing from Los Angeles to Chicago via parts of Nevada, Utah and Colorado. I was on my way through to New Orleans, working on a film script. I never made it, On my stopover in Chicago, saw an old friend.....stayed and eventually married her, 16 years ago. :)

Those primordial canyons and vast stretches of desert really are something, agreed, Jay.

Your best bet is certainly Corsica, Ajaccio for example.
But if you want to stick with "continental" France, I would look at Perpignan or Nice. Nice is nice...

Thanks, Joli. I think it was at DIJ, Patrus's fete, where I had a wonderful Corsican wine though the name eludes me, unfortunately. Had another one from a Chicago store, again, I forget the name....but two wonderfully lush, yet well-crafted & dry, red wines. The taste of southern herbs, earth and deep maquis. Yumm.

However - what's the GJ scene? Kids?

My neighbor's dad lives on a boat in Montpellier, and he canals everywhere....now THAT is something I can hang with.... (one of my fave cookbooks for lore more than anything else, A Culinary Journey in Gascony...a canal boat b&b) just have to convince my more sedentary family that it's a good life....!

Got some friends here in Corpus always wanted to and they did, after the kids got older, as a matter of fact the oldest Daughter is a Flight Attendant, that means FREE FARES. How cool is that. They can only stay I think two months. Immigration LAWS.

You may need to check on that if your thinking of moving.

Paul I PM you, check your djangobooks inbox.

New Caledonia might be good if you want to stay in a French speaking country. But that's really far.
