The "chin-cello" ! Yes, I don't think they'd sound great on my little 15.5" viola.

The Evah Pirrazzi (sp?) tend to darken the tone. If your fiddle is already dark, you may just get growly. Fiddles that already have a lot of power do well with the Pirastro Wondertone Solo and I've recently really liked the Violino on my Jon Cooper violin.

thanks, markseale! I'll check them out. I discovered, partly by searching threads on forums, partly by experimentation, that I could get a better amplified tone just by dialing down the midrange controls on my amp--suddenly all the scratchiness and squawk was gone. Still experimenting...
