Alors. Alas. My brother-in-law who lives in Spain put me on to Paco years ago. Great music.

Got a chance to see him in person a few times while living in SF CA, including the three guitars series with John Mclaughlin and Al Dimeola at the SF Jazz Fest.

If you can find a copy of the Carlos Saura movie version of Carmen, you get to see him acting a bit, but mostly playing a flamenco version of the Carmen opera as they interpreted it.

Heard a bit of an interview with him today, speaking about the fact that although he was not actually "Roma," he did lead a cultural gypsy lifestyle growing up. When I was studying flamenco myself, it was always inspiring, if not daunting, to listen to him play.

The public radio news report stated that he felt the heart attack coming on while he was playing guitar on the beach. He was taken to a hospital where he died. Sorry to see him go.

This makes me sad. Talent like this shouldn't have to leave us.

He was so good and dedicated. Not that old either. I'd watch him and Pena on youtube and ponder what other outer limits of possibility is in the guitar.

'Friday Night In San Francisco' was the album which inspired me to pick up the acoustic guitar. Very very sad and far too early.
