I never see any method books, tips, instructional material or even youtube videos geared towards helping bassists get the right feel for jazz manouche. Given that the bass is notoriously hard to hear on some old Django recordings, I often wonder if there is a bit more help out there for us low-enders wanting to play this style. Thanks for any input!

That said, there are now so many ways of playing bass in this style, with people playing anywhere from the old gut string slapping technique, through Ray Brown, and even the occasional bit of modern 4 with all the ornaments. The thing lots of them can't do though, is that real old solid two with slapped solos - that's what I love to hear, like this:
