Hyperhip Media usage under Linux?

I have been chasing this topic in many wrong directions - interested in Denis Chang's instruction, I mistakenly thought they were Denis Chang's product, but not.

There are a couple levels of detour in my quest: Firstly, I was given an Amazon gift certificate (no, I don't know her name ;O), so that's step 1.

The HHM product is available as a download through Amazon, and is listed as having Windows/MAC compatibility. I recently changed both computers over to Ubuntu Studio (Linux) and wonder if the 'product' (physical or virtual) contains folders to allow 'generic' access by a user of another OS, or is the whole package embedded in a console/GUI that can only run on the target OS, as marketed? For example, playing .mp4 files via something like VLC, and reading .pdf files in the functional equivalent of Adobe Acrobat Reader.

I have successfully run some Windows software under Linux through Wine, but that's really hit-or-miss. Might even be dependent on what's on one's computer...

I have questions in with the company Wayne Nakamura referred me to regarding download management of HHM materials. Hopefully they can answer these, but meanwhile I figured someone here may have a hands-on answer.

The last twist may be in the manner Amazon connects to HHM - that could be another area of problem linking an Amazon account to a HHM account - that's the implied method on the Amazon site. Any problems there may 'break' the potential success of directly accessing content from a folder - have to be able to download it first!

If not, I'll have to spend the gift certificate on other TBD things.

From my own experience (Ubuntu 14.04), you won't have a problem with this. It's been a while since I've done it, but I seem to recall that you can do it all via the platformpurple web shop and online player, rather than using direct downloads. That way you just log into a site instead of having to open yet another bloody hot-synch to the cloud.

As long as the route via Amazon allows you to create an HHM user account, this should be available to you come what may.

If worst comes to worst and you are forced to use some crappy clientside GUI to access content, and wine doesn't run it properly, then you will always have the option of running inside a virtual machine with vmware or virtualbox

Hello-

Platformpurple says they use their proprietary player interface to deliver the content and can't really assure anything outside the requirements of same. A fair and reasonable response, and probably a smart one, as encouraging grey areas could waste their time trying to resolve problems created or poorly communicated by interface experimentalists.

So, I can spell the words Wimglenn suggests...I am not sure if I need a virtual machine or want to try yet. VMWare I saw at a previous job and don't want to think or talk about that...

I found my XP Pro disk, reinstalled it on a formatted hard drive partition, and it booted fine, but doesn't see any network. Then I couldn't seem to select Ubuntu boot as an option. I reinstalled that again and it finds my network, and I'm here as a test.

I'm trying to figure out how to more easily set up dual-boot. I have little need for XP any more - a few stubborn things that will be easier left as Windows arena activities (vintage large SCSI scanners with their own software to that), iPhone, as much as I love to hate it, provides me with a platform for weird science apps like a spectrum analyzer and FFT display I waste more of my time on, and that requires iTunes for updates/installs, also Linux-repellant.

Lastly, and feebly attempting to get back on topic, running the HyperHip product under Windows solves that problem as well. I am a poor time manager and need to recognize the few opportunities I can to stop reinventing wheels, and places to store all my not-quite-right wheel attempts, even if the square ones look like they are still good for something.

don't know if it's better to continue in one monstrous post here , or make another entry, but Platform Purple didn't respond (it IS the weekend, however) regarding what kind of notation is in the HHM Denis Chang products...on-screen or printable?

Some people display their notation as on-screen images, others use pdf files. I prefer to not be tied to a computer for everything...printing a sheet of paper and carrying it with me to read at lunch or wherever is preferable to on-screen pixel delivery...

Anyway, I'm looking at the first two volumes of Denis' Improv & Technique.

I think I'll go look at the HHM site again to see if there are previews, and check back later here for any snickering or suggestions.
